His journey took a significant turn when he enrolled in a university course on Asian religions, where he first heard about Lord Krishna and the profound teachings of the Bhagavad Gita. Through the writings of A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), Matsya Das discovered the philosophy of Krishna consciousness. The teachings about the nature of the soul, karma, and Maya (illusion) deeply resonated with him and answered many questions he had struggled with for years. Soon he began practicing mantra meditation by chanting the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra, gradually transforming his lifestyle and understanding of life. Despite facing challenges and balancing worldly responsibilities, a chance encounter with a devotee inspired him to recommit himself fully to spiritual life. His journey continued with visits to temples and devotee communities, including a memorable experience at a farm community temple in West Virginia where he experienced temple life, kirtan, and devotional service firsthand. Eventually, Matsya Das moved to Atlanta and stayed in an ashram, where he embraced the brahmachari lifestyle, dedicated himself to book distribution, and immersed himself fully in devotional service. Leaving behind his job and university life was not an easy decision and surprised his family, but Matsya Das felt a deep calling to dedicate his life to spreading Krishna consciousness.
