The television studio had been sealed since 1964. Its red curtains were still hanging. Its cameras remained pointed toward the empty stage. Its audience seats were covered in dust. And one carbon-arc spotlight continued to work without being connected to power. A warning had been carved into the metal base: DO NOT LET THE SHADOW FINISH THE SONG At 12:14 AM, vocalist Celeste Vale stepped beneath the spotlight and sang: “Shadow singer, stay behind me.” Her shadow opened its mouth half a second before she did. It used Celeste’s voice to sing the next line. But Celeste had not sung it yet. After the first song, the shadow developed a pair of eyes. During the second track, it stopped copying Celeste’s movements. When Celeste lowered her hand, the shadow kept its arm raised and pointed toward the empty audience. During the third recording, the shadow stepped away from the wall and crossed the stage floor like a flat black figure. By the fourth song, Celeste’s skin had begun losing its color. Her shadow was changing too. It gained the gold of her dress. The shape of her hair. The small beauty mark beneath her left eye. During the fifth track, the shadows of the instruments continued playing even after the musicians stopped. By the sixth, hundreds of ownerless shadows had appeared in the audience seats, dancing whenever the chorus began. During the seventh song, the shadow singer developed Celeste’s complete face. It began taking over her lead vocal. By the eighth recording, the studio monitors showed only the shadow band. The real musicians were no longer visible on camera. During the ninth song, a new television schedule appeared on the wall: CELESTE VALE AND THE VELVET HALOS LIVE AFTER MIDNIGHT PERFORMERS: SHADOW CAST ONLY At 4:26 AM, the shadow singer stepped in front of the real microphone and sang: “Every spotlight needs someone to disappear.” Every light inside the studio turned toward Celeste. Her gold dress became gray. Her skin faded into a flat black shape. Her voice moved from her body into the shadow standing beside her. The shadow gained skin. Hair. Color. Breath. As the final chorus repeated, the new Celeste walked away from the stage. The real Celeste was pressed against the back wall as a motionless silhouette. By sunrise, The Velvet Halos had disappeared. Their instruments remained connected. One black glove was found near the microphone. One gold shoe was found beneath the spotlight. And four human shadows remained on the studio wall. When the lights were switched off, three disappeared. Celeste’s shadow did not.
