Thuingaleng Muivah’s recent homecoming to his ancestral village of Somdal had stirred deep emotions and debate across the Northeast. His visit, widely covered by the media, has revived conversations about the unresolved Naga political issue and the region’s long and complex relationship with movements for independence. Muivah’s return comes nearly a decade after the signing of the 2015 Framework Agreement, which was expected to bring peace but remains stalled on key issues like a separate flag and constitution. In this editorial, EastMojo Editor-in-Chief, Karma Paljor highlights that while the Naga struggle has splintered into several groups, its core demand for self-determination has never faded. Yet, internal divisions and regional disparities—particularly between Nagaland and Eastern Nagaland—continue to weaken Naga unity. Despite some progress, such as the merger of NDPP and NPF, many Nagas still feel ignored by the Centre. He also argues that unity among Naga communities is essential for a peaceful future. As some want to move on from decades of insurgency while others hold on to the dream of sovereignty, the challenge lies in reconciling these differences. Until that happens, the Naga question will remain unresolved, and peace in the region uncertain.
