“Our Father”—with these simple words begins the prayer that Jesus himself taught his disciples. It is the only prayer in the Gospels that he explicitly teaches—and therein lies its special significance, for in the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus opens a new path to God: He is the Father. But why do the disciples ask Jesus at all: “Lord, teach us to pray”? They already know prayer from the tradition of Israel. And yet, they sense something special: Jesus lives from a deep, intimate relationship with God, whom he calls Father. Again and again, he withdraws to pray, seeks silence, and visibly lives from this connection. The disciples long to be drawn into this quality of relationship. Prayer is not merely a religious duty, but an expression of a living relationship. The most important things in life have to do with the quality of our relationships—with being loved and being able to love. Jesus teaches the disciples to address God as Father and to live from this relationship. And through Jesus, we are drawn into a new fellowship with God—into a family where God is Father and we are brothers and sisters. Listen to the entire lecture here.
