【無形文化財】角谷家が守る「茶釜」の真髄。1400℃の鉄を御す。/ 1400°C Molten Iron: The Art of Japanese Casting

Seiichi Kakutani, a holder of Osaka Prefecture's designated Intangible Cultural Property. The Kakutani family, a prestigious ironworking family that has produced two Living National Treasures (holders of Important Intangible Cultural Properties). Witness the refined fingertips of the craftsman, the rhythm of the person working with iron, and the traditional techniques. This video conveys the skill, passion, and inheritance of tradition through the extremely labor-intensive process of creating a tea ceremony kettle. [Highlights of the process] 0:00 Mold creation 5:30 Pouring molten iron at 1400℃ 12:00 Finishing coloring 00:00 - 01:37 Introduction to the video's purpose and production collaboration. 01:38 - 02:46 Introduction of metal casting artist Seiichi Kakutani and explanation of the overall process of creating a tea ceremony kettle (creation of the outer mold and core, pouring of iron). 02:47 - 05:16 The process of creating the outer mold begins. This includes mixing the clay and the "rough shaping" process, where the wooden mold is rotated to refine the shape. 05:17 - 06:35 The "medium rough shaping" and "hair finishing" processes involve carving the inside of the mold and then smoothing it with finer clay. 06:36 - 08:39 The processes of "spatula pressing" to create patterns on the surface of the kiln, embedding the molds for the "ring attachments" (for the handles), and "surface finishing" to create the desired texture. 08:40 - 09:51 The outer mold is fired over charcoal to remove impurities from the clay ("mold firing"). 09:52 - 13:18 The "core" is created, forming the inside of the kiln. This involves filling the outer mold with clay and precisely carving the surface, calculating the required thickness. 13:19 - 15:01 Preparation for melting the iron (Japanese iron, tuna, old iron) in the furnace, and application of "blackening" and "sodium chloride" to improve mold release. 15:02 - 18:47 The "casting" process, where the outer mold and core are combined and molten iron (molten metal) at a high temperature of 1400 degrees Celsius is poured in. 18:48 - 19:48 After the iron has solidified, the mold is broken and the kettle is removed from inside. 19:49 - 21:10 The finishing process, where the surface of the kettle is fired and colored with lacquer and red iron oxide, and an introduction of the completed "Futaba Kantsuki Fumon Kettle". 21:11 - Conclusion: Mr. Kakutani's relationship with his father (Living National Treasure, Kazuyoshi Kakutani) and son, and the joy of inheriting traditional crafts.
