McCoy Tyner Trio - Full Concert [HD] | Live at North Sea Jazz Festival 1996
Alfred McCoy Tyner (December 11, 1938 – March 6, 2020) was an American jazz pianist. He is best known for his work for The John Coltrane Quartet. Tyner was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the eldest of three children. Although the whole family was musical, Tyner's mother encouraged him the most to develop musically. He started playing the piano at the age of 13 and after two years he was completely in the grip of music. His first real performance was with Benny Golson and he became first pianist in Golson and Art Farmers jazztet in 1959. After his departure, Tyner became a pianist with Coltrane's legendary quartet. Coltrane had known Tyner for a while and also used one of his compositions: The Believer. Tyner first appeared on Coltrane's well-known record My Favorite Things for Atlantic Records. The John Coltrane Quartet, which consisted of John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Elvin Jones on drums, toured almost non-stop between 1961 and 1965 and made a number of classic albums, such as Crescent and the world-famous A Love Supreme. Tyner has also made a number of albums as a leader, which have had a major influence on other jazz pianists. After leaving Coltranes Quartet, he began a series of albums for Blue Note. He then switched to the Milestone label and made many influential albums, such as Sahara (1972), Enlightenment (1973) and Fly With The Wind. In his music for Blue Note and Milestone he often used the music of Coltrane, but he was also influenced by African and Asian music. These albums are often cited as examples of essential, innovative jazz from the 70s, which was neither Fusion nor Free Jazz. In 1975 he also used a harpsichord, an instrument that is rarely found in jazz. In the late eighties, early nineties he worked with a big band. Two albums by that band ("Turning Point" and "Journey") were awarded a Grammy. Tyner still performed with various trios. He used to be a Sunni Muslim. His Muslim name was Sulaimon Saud. Later, Tyner had no specific religion. McCoy Tyner was once married and has three sons. His brother, Jarvis Tyner, holds a high position in the American Communist Party. McCoy, however, said he was not involved in any political movement himself. Welcome to the official North Sea Jazz Archive!
