Hanging pieces of meat, whole fish laid out on ice, and vendors carving up products with sharp knives in front of customers. These weren't for the faint of heart, but that's precisely the authenticity of this place – nothing was hidden, everything was on display, raw and real. Walking the aisles, I absorbed every detail. Vendors shouted, encouraging purchases, women carried bags stuffed with fresh herbs, and elderly Georgians sipped coffee and chatted loudly at small tables. There was something chaotic about it all, yet at the same time incredibly warm and homely. The experience was delicious and interesting – not only because I sampled local produce, but because I was able to touch the everyday lives of Kutaisi's inhabitants. The bazaar isn't a tourist attraction designed to appeal to visitors. It is the beating heart of the city, a place where history, tradition and everyday life meet.
