Bell Ringing at St Nicholas Pier Head, Merseyside
Pier Head... I have heard an awful lot about these bells. I was told frequently that "they are truly something special" and frankly I cannot agree more. The Church of Our Lady and St Nicholas is mainly a 1952 reconstruction, replacing the original Georgian Gothic structure. Only the tower and its side wings are original! The rest was destroyed by the Luftwaffe bombings during WWII. The tower used to contain a ring of twelve bells cast by William Dobson of Downham Market, but these were removed during the war for safe keeping. When the church was rebuilt, it was decided to recast them into the current 41cwt (almost 42!) ring of twelve in the key of C. They are really something special... bright, melodious and just plain awe inspiring! Most of this footage was taken during the RWNYC day itself but the end clip of Spliced Cambridge and Little Bob Maximus was taken on their Friday night practice. Do enjoy these glorious bells!
