FB Marketplace Find / Bassett MCM Dresser gets an elevated and bold new look!

I spotted this mid century dresser on FBMP for $75. It’s a Bassett, and has loads of potential, plus all the original hardware. I have so many other furniture projects to do, but I just couldn’t pass this one up, even though it was an hour and a half drive to go get it! This is a lovely old dresser and is definitely in need of a fix up! I cleaned it, removed the old finish, and completed any necessary repairs. I cut the bottom of the base flush and constructed a new base from poplar, added legs to the piece, both were painted black. I painted the top two drawers black as well, just to add some visual interest. I really wanted to let the walnut veneer shine through, so I did not use any stain at all, just Minwax wipe on poly in a Satin sheen. The original hardware was cleaned, refreshed with gold gilding wax, and put back on the piece. Every piece I refinish teaches me something new--whether its a new skill using power tools, figuring out how to make repairs, or discovering what works and what doesn’t. What I have found in my furniture refinishing journey is that you don’t HAVE to be an expert to get started--you learn by doing, one project at a time.
