Kutubiyya Masjid - The Largest Mosque in Marrakech, Morocco

This is a 12th century Masjid built by the Almohad caliph Abd al Mu’min. The minaret of this Masjid is the most iconic landmark of the city. I was fortunate enough to visit the Masjid a few times, including for Jummah. Al’hamdu’lillah, over 10,000 people were present during the Jummah prayer. What I liked most about this Masjid is its simplistic interior. There were no giant chandeliers, expensive tiles, or elaborate calligraphy. The interior was plain and beautifully simple. I also really liked the unique wudu area. There were many small buckets placed there. You fill one of those buckets with water and perform your wudu using as little water as possible. I’ve never seen this in any other Masjids. This Masjid is also known for its twin foundations. The current building is actually the second Masjid built on this site. When the builders discovered that the original structure had a misaligned Qibla, they constructed a new Masjid adjacent to it around 1168.
