Together with Tobe Hooper, Kim Henkel created the iconic horror classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in 1974. Two decades later, Kim Henkel fired up the chainsaw again and dared to create a sequel. He wrote the screenplay and cast the then-unknown actors Renée Zellweger and Matthew McCounaughey in its leading roles. But even the potential of these two talents couldn't save 1995's The Return of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I don't think even director and screenwriter Kim Henkel really knew what he was doing. On the one hand, he explains his work as a humorous deconstruction of the original with a socially critical subtext; on the other hand, he admits that he simply wrote some motifs into the film because he found them funny, e.g., the subplot about a secret Illuminati organization. Several film theories surround The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation. I think that's nonsense. This is a classic example of a work that is completely overinterpreted simply because cinephiles can't stand the fact that a seemingly arbitrary film is just that: arbitrary, without a double meaning. I do recognize, however, that the senseless madness of Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation offers a certain entertainment potential. The film is loud, vulgar, and excessively exaggerated. For that, for the trashy direction and the witty German dubbing, one can celebrate the film – but I won't. For me, however, Part 2 remains the worst film in the series, because it was not only trashy and exaggerated, but also incredibly boring – this film at least had a somewhat acceptable pacing. The bottom line, however, is that Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation remains a work that you can safely skip. I give it 4.4 out of 10 points.
