The addition of a Pokemon Trainer in Brawl was one of the greatest things they could have done for Pokemon as a series, and while it was a rather shaky debut, the reformation of the Pokemon Trainer in Ultimate has really turned some heads.This has lead to a ton of different Pokemon trainers being requested for Smash, but one thing I hardly ever see is the concept of a Pokemon Rival, a direct antithesis to the trainer as a character and design. While there have been plenty of rivals over the years, none really stands out quite like that of the Rival from Gen 2, for not only is his backstory surprisingly rooted in major characters, but his Pokemon selection is one of the most varied.
