Aqua Instructor Tip - explores a simple but highly effective variation of the classic Twist. 🌟💦
One of the things I love about aqua fitness is taking a familiar movement and tweaking it just enough to create a completely different experience. This week's Aqua Tip focuses on the Twist. You know the movement. Jumping and twisting the hips from side to side. Simple enough, right? For this version, I keep it grounded with the toes remaining in contact with the floor and the heels lightly lifted. The feet stay together. The knees stay together. The water supports the body, so there is no need to push heavily into the floor. 💥TIP - The arms drive the movement. Hands are open with fingers spread wide. Elbows stay away from the body. The upper arm remains relatively still while the lower arm rotates, pulling in and pushing away through the water. This creates the force that drives the twist. When coached correctly, participants will feel: • Abdominals working to control the rotation • Biceps and triceps assisting the arm action • Functional rotational movement that supports everyday activities • Increased resistance from the turbulence you create The key coaching point? Speed matters. Encourage participants to create "white water" around them. The more turbulence they generate, the more resistance they create. If they aren't feeling the movement in their abdominals and upper arms, chances are they need to drive the arms harder and create more water movement. Pool Deck Coaching Tips 🔹Feet together 🔹Knees together 🔹Toes maintain contact with the floor 🔹Heels lifted as far away from the floor as possible 🔹Hands open and fingers spread 🔹Elbows away from the body 🔹Upper arm stays relatively still 🔹Lower arm drives the action 🔹Create white water and turbulence Once participants have mastered the basic movement pattern, you can progress it by alternating grounded twists with rebounding twists for a little extra variety and challenge. This is also a fantastic movement to demonstrate from a chair or an aqua frame. It allows participants to clearly see the heel lift, knee position and arm action without feeling like you need to perform at full intensity on pool deck. Check out this week's video and pay particular attention to the arm position. It's the arms that create the movement, the resistance and ultimately the results. Want more support?
