Approximately 2,000 residences or businesses in the Denizköşkler neighborhood of Avcılar were closed to construction in 2008 as a risky area. Consequently, the houses lack renovation permits. Despite deep cracks in the columns and beams of the buildings, the apartments are occupied. Apartment owners described living in fear every day. Mekiye Şimşek said, "We've lived here for 20 years, and we're really worried. Unfortunately, we can't sleep, and our children are scared, too. The night of the Düzce earthquake, my children and I woke up in panic. Now, my children and I sleep together in the living room every night."
