238 - How to Be Happy - 01 I Swami Nirviseshananda Tirtha
Day 1 of a 2 day lecture series on being happy, during Malaysia Sadhana Shibiram 2024. Venue: Signature Hotel, B-10 Pantai Business Park, off Jalan Pantai Baharu, 59200 Kaula Lumpur, 13 January 2024 In this Satsang, Swamiji says that we are always looking for happiness because there is a feeling of insufficiency in us and we have a delusion that something from the world will make us happy. The truth is that, even if we get happiness from the world, it is transitory. The great thinkers of our land discovered that when they withdrew from the world and focused within, they were flooded with incomparable bliss. So, they concluded that the bliss they had was not from the world, but from the inmost presence within. Our mind is always under the sway of desires. When a desired object is attained, the desire is no more there in the mind. The moment the desire is eliminated from the mind, it becomes calm. So, elimination of desires is what makes us happy. When desires are eliminated, we work with joy, not looking for joy as a result. With the elimination of desires, the mind becomes calm and becomes most efficient. Being free of selfish desires and personal gains, one works for the welfare of others. Bhagavad Gita says that a person who is free of preference and prejudice, who is self-restrained and guided by the Self, he attains placidity or happiness. When placidity dawns, one is not elated in happiness and overwhelmed by grief. One who is engulfed by the inner joy arising from the Self, he is never deluded by sensory joys of the world. In reply to a question on desires, Swamiji quotes Bhagavad Gita and says that by constantly reflecting on sensory pleasures, man develops a clinging to them. From that clinging, arises desire. How to avoid clinging and desires? Instead of spending mind-hours on objects, a seeker must spend time introspecting on the Self. By this constant introspection, all clinging and desires of the mind will get dissolved.
