How to grow Thyme / Thymus vulgaris basics
heyyyo I hope yall are having a good thyme out there! lmao I Just wanted to give you some background info about this crazy wonderful herb, Thymus vulgaris. It's a hardy little perennial that is exceptionally cold hardy, cold hardy to ~-25°C. this plant is perfectly edible and I encourage yall to use it in your cooking. it pairs well with many poultry dishes, and can even be infused into a tea. Some growing characteristics and anatomy.. this plant has a mature height of a little under a foot. They have an entire margin on the leaf blade, and a very smooth feel to them. The blooms are personate in shape. they come in white, light purple and pink. The plant, I will say, gets somewhat woody and the flavour changes.. it becomes more bitter, while the plant is in bloom. If you wish to reduce blooming to generate more flavorful tender lead growth, simply pinch back bloom stalks as the emerge, and keep your plant less water stressed. These plants, in my observation, are not heavy feeders. I find that many liquid feeds actually burn the leaves making them go yellow. This plant requires optimal drainage to be successful. Common signs of underwatering include wilting all over, crispy brown spots spreading on leaves, and and yellow leaves. Common signs of overwatering include wilting that starts from the has of the plant, leaves which go black and mushy and a strong pungent odor. This plant is mounded in form, but does spread to form a carpet of foliage. The undersides of the leaves are commonly purple in pigmentation. They are evergreen in nature, but may lose some foliage in severe cold snaps. Protect from extreme cold in its first season to toughen it up. There are many variegated and lemon-scented varieties I recommend toy guys check out too!! Just a couple things I didnt explain in the video that I wanted to mention: this plant is also native to the Peloponnese Peninsula I'm greece, as well as the Island of Crete. It also prefers soils with an airtight composition, but will do just fine in more constricted growing media too, but at the risk of slowing down it's growth rate. The antiseptic quality found in the essential oil of Thyme is called Thymol, the name escaped me in the video, I think I called it Thymine by accident. Have a good day you guys! I've been SO busy so my bad if I have been inconsistent lately haha stay blessed homies and thank you for the support ~Max :)
