Art and Allusion: Image Construction in Greek Vase-Painting - François Lissarrague
UC Berkeley Classics Sather Lecture, February 6, 2021. This lecture represents the first in our series of four Sather Lectures during the Spring 2021 semester. Each lecture is conducted remotely via Zoom and then uploaded here to our YouTube page. This incredible lecture, “Art and Allusion: Image Construction in Attic Vase-Painting,” by François Lissarrague (Centennial Sather Professor of Classics, Directeur d'Études Emeritus, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris) takes us on a beautiful journey through many images on ancient vases that were actually used by people for drinking, pouring, carrying, etc. The construction of those images, the playfulness of them, the mental leaps made by ancient viewers, and the interplay between image and physical setting are some of the many themes covered here. We invite you to enjoy the art of imagery, the art of looking at imagery, and the making of meaning in this lecture. This event was organized by the UC Berkeley Classics Department as part of the Sather Lecture series and was presented by the College of Letters & Science, Division of Arts & Humanities as part of the Arts & Ideas Live Online! series.
