Are People Being Dumb About Multitrack Tape Emulators Like Tape16 & GCS Model 8?

I've seen a lot said about Tape16, a DAW that tries to be a multitrack tape machine, and to be honest, I don't get it. Are people too ill-disciplined to work to their own framework or do they need a piece of software to limit their choices? It's been really bugging me why this is a thing.
