As histórias de Waldir Pires [2014]

Waldir Pires is one of the few figures in our political history who witnessed the main events of the 20th century in Brazil: he was active in the "The Oil is Ours" campaign, was a federal deputy during the Juscelino Kubitschek administration, general consultant in the João Goulart government, a political exile, Minister of Social Security under Tancredo Neves (retained by José Sarney), and from 2000 onwards was again a federal deputy and minister under Lula in the areas of Defense and the Comptroller General of the Union. The politician was one of the last high-ranking government officials to leave the Planalto Palace after the 1964 coup and recounts in this documentary details of the deposition of President Jango, his escape abroad, and the struggle to regain political rights during the height of AI-5, the most violent period of the military dictatorship. Waldir Pires was a close friend of Rubens Paiva and was with him on the morning he disappeared and was later presumed dead. The politician from Bahia was also the main opponent of one of the strongest representatives of Northeastern politics, Antônio Carlos Magalhães, whom he defeated in the race for governor of Bahia in 1986. At 87 years old, Waldir is preparing to retire from party politics, but still believes that politics is the solution to the world's inequalities.
