Can seagrass bring the North Sea back to life?

Seagrass once covered large parts of the Dutch coastline. Today, only a small fraction remains. In the Oosterschelde, Sea Rangers are working to restore these hidden underwater forests. Thanks to Sumthing members, they can collect seagrass seeds, grow young plants, and replant them in areas where seagrass once thrived. Helping marine life return, one meadow at a time. Through monthly contributions, Sumthing members support the restoration of underwater ecosystems. During the seagrass season, Sea Rangers collect seeds, cultivate young plants, and reintroduce them to locations where seagrass historically grew in abundance. Step by step, an essential ecosystem is recovering. Seagrass provides food and shelter for marine life, captures carbon, and helps keep our coastal waters healthy. Want to support projects like this? ABOUT THIS PROJECT Sea Ranger Service is restoring seagrass meadows in the Oosterschelde, one of the Netherlands' most important marine ecosystems. At the same time, they train young Sea Rangers for careers in the maritime sector. This means the project not only supports biodiversity but also creates new opportunities for people. Through research, monitoring, and carefully planting seagrass, the Sea Rangers are helping to build stronger and more resilient coastal ecosystems.
