Description of Willingdon Dam History and Construction The dam has a fascinating heritage. Its construction began under the reign of the last Nawab of Junagadh, Nawab Mahabat Khan III, with a traditional foundation ceremony in May 1929. Designed by British engineer E. Proctor Sims and built by skilled Indian craftsmen using distinctive Girnar black stones, the dam took seven years to complete. It was officially inaugurated in January 1936 and named after the Marquess of Willingdon, the Viceroy of India at the time. Purpose and Topography The dam was originally engineered to solve Junagadh’s severe drinking water scarcity. Strategically built into a valley surrounded by hills on three sides, it naturally collects rainwater routing from the surrounding highlands. It stands 44 feet high and has a massive storage capacity of one billion gallons, continuing to serve as a vital water source for the city today. The Tourist Experience Willingdon Dam is loved for its peaceful, serene atmosphere. Visitors face a short, 100-meter walk or stairs climb to reach the top of the structure, where they are rewarded with sweeping views of the rugged Girnar range. The Monsoon Magic: While pleasant in the winter, the dam is most spectacular during the monsoon season (July to September), when the reservoir overflows, creating lush green backdrops and small, temporary waterfalls. The Langurs: The dam is famous for its resident troops of friendly langur monkeys, who are known to gently eat peanuts or gram right out of the hands of travelers. Religious Harmony: Near the dam, a path of roughly 2,500 steps climbs up 2,779 feet to the revered shrine of Saint Jamiyal Shah Datar, a sacred site frequented equally by Hindu and Muslim devotees. Important Visitor Note: The area surrounding the dam is designated as a strict plastic-free zone by the forestry department. Rangers inspect visitors at the entrance, so ensure you do not carry plastic bottles or disposable bags. Entry is entirely free.
