Description of the IMS Issue: A failure rate of 8% for the single row Porsche IMS bearing and 1% for the dual row Porsche IMS bearing were reported at the time of the Eisen Class Action lawsuit. However, as Porsche Boxster, Cayman, and 911 engines age, the failure rate for the Porsche IMS bearing increases, rather than decreasing over time like some falsely claim. Just because your Porsche's intermediate shaft bearing hasn't failed yet doesn't mean you won't have to change your IMS bearing. The Porsche IMS bearing is a wear item and needs to be replaced as part of regularly scheduled maintenance for all Boxster and 911 996 models (where the intermediate shaft bearing is serviceable).
