Is this juniper bonsai dead or alive? What does a dormant tree look like? Bonsai For Beginners Ep 12

It's that time of the year where we get many people bringing in their tree asking for help because it looks dead. Knowing if your bonsai is dormant or not can be tricky, but luckily we have a few tips to share. The information in this video pertains ONLY to outdoor trees here in the PNW climate. If you are looking for information for tropical trees, this is NOT the video for you. Keep in mind, some trees dormant faster than others, but the one thing you should NEVER do is bringing it indoors where it's warm. We've seen it too many times where a new owner thinks the tree is deteriorating in health, so they bring it inside to "warm" it up. It will only wake it up from it's dormant phase pre-maturely. The tree may look great for a month or two, but overtime, it will downgrade in health before it ultimately stops being a tree. You can simply look at the bottom of the needles and see if there is any green. If you see green, then your tree is just dormant. If there's no green, then it's probably damaged. You can also cut off a thin layer of the bark off the trunk of the tree. If you see green in the tissue, your tree is fine! If it's all brown or have no color, then it's most likely damaged.
