Charlie on Divorce (Matt. 5:31-32)

As we continue in our series, Life Beyond Religion, we come to a passage in Jesus' Sermon on the Mount that has often been misused or taken out of context. While Matthew 5:31-32 was meant to protect the vulnerable and uphold the seriousness of marriage, its misuse has often placed undue burdens on women, particularly in unhealthy or abusive marriages. Taking the verse out of its cultural and biblical context, or applying it without nuance, can lead to harm rather than healing. A balanced interpretation considers the whole of scripture, Jesus’ emphasis on mercy and justice, and the modern realities of marriage dynamics, ensuring that the verse isn’t used to perpetuate suffering. That's why we understand that there are verses within Jesus' teaching that need further discussion and time spent so that is why Charlie recorded this video on divorce, to give the text more attention.
