The two most well-known are probably Roman Abramovich, who made Chelsea one of the most successful clubs in the last twenty years, and Alexei Mordashov, who is currently worth $29 billion. Russian oligarchs are wealthy, pro-government, and could play a decisive role in the Ukrainian conflict. Their rise began with the fall of the Soviet Union, when the newly formed Russian Federation was forced to privatize previously public companies: President Boris Yeltsin sold them at a bargain price to a group of businessmen close to him, who broke them up and then resold them. A true "oligarchy," a Greek word meaning a regime in which power is in the hands of a few people. Even today, thirty years later, the oligarchs share their power with the regime, once with Yeltsin and now with Vladimir Putin, who, upon coming to power, limited himself to changing the oligarchs' ranks, favoring those closest to him, often his former KGB colleagues. The mechanism is simple: Putin guarantees them state support to expand their businesses, while the oligarchs guarantee Putin stability and loyalty. The main businessmen are Roman Abramovich, Oleg Deripaska, Alisher Usmanov, Vladimir Potanin, Alexey Mordashov, and Vladimir Lisin. Some of them, through messages and interviews, and after being hit by economic sanctions and asset seizures by Western countries, have expressed opposition to the war in Ukraine and President Putin's moves. But those who influence Putin most are the so-called "siloviki," the oligarchs of the state apparatus, members of the secret services or the armed forces, who are even more loyal and close to the president.
