What turned frightened disciples into witnesses? What took a message that sounded impossible — “He has been raised” — and made it something people were prepared to stake their lives on? The answer the New Testament gives is consistent: they did not merely cherish a memory; they claimed an encounter. They believed the risen Jesus had appeared to them. They were prepared to proclaim this message without any payoff from a human point of view.
