RVing the Nass Valley | Nisga’a Nation, Lava Beds & the Coastal Village of Kincolith

Join us on an RV road trip into the Nass Valley in northwestern British Columbia, exploring the lands of the Nisga’a Nation, the coastal village of Kincolith (Gingolx), and the famous Nisga’a Lava Beds. Along the way we deal with a late-night search for a place to sleep, fuel up in Terrace, and stop at a fascinating roadside curiosity known as the “Water Tree.” Once in the Nass Valley, we settle into a quiet forest campground near the famous Nisga’a Lava Beds and prepare for a weekend of exploring. The next day we take a scenic drive down the Nass River to the coastal village of Kincolith (Gingolx) where the river meets the Pacific Ocean. Here we visit the incredible Nisga’a Museum, learn about local culture and history, explore the harbor, watch spawning salmon, and enjoy some fresh seafood by the ocean. From lava fields and coastal mountains to rivers full of salmon and welcoming communities, the Nass Valley is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich regions in northern British Columbia. In our next episode, we’ll explore the dramatic Nisga’a Lava Beds and tell the powerful story of the volcanic eruption in the 1700s that created a 30 km lava flow and became the second deadliest natural disaster in Canadian history.
