Without them, speech sounds robotic: "I'm tired. I'm going to bed." With conjunctions, it's natural: "I'm tired, so I'm going to bed because I have work tomorrow." The main difficulty with German conjunctions is that different types affect word order differently. We'll examine three groups: coordinating conjunctions (AUDOS—they don't change word order), subordinating conjunctions (they send the verb to the end), and conjunctional adverbs (they place the verb immediately after themselves). In this lesson: Why conjunctions are needed and why word order is so important in German Three types of connecting words and how to distinguish them Coordinating conjunctions (AUDOS): aber, und, denn, oder, sondern — "zero position," the word order does not change When sondern is needed (only after negation: "not this, but that") Subordinating conjunctions: weil, dass, wenn, obwohl, als, bevor, nachdem, während — the verb goes to the end The verb in a subordinate clause goes to the end but remains in its conjugated form When the subordinate clause comes first: "gluing" two verbs together with a comma Conjunctive adverbs: deshalb, trotzdem, dann, sonst, außerdem, jedoch — the verb comes immediately after them Three ways to say "because": denn, weil, deshalb — what's the difference? Why? Is denn a "workaround" and should you overuse it? 📚 Grammar 2.0 — a complete German grammar course from scratch! 📌 Subscribe to the channel and give it a 👍 to stay up to date with new lessons! ➖➖➖ My grammar courses: ❇️ "From 0 to A1.1 in 6 weeks": https://deutsch-mit-yehor.com/course/... ❇️ "From A1.1 to A1 in 6 weeks" https://deutsch-mit-yehor.com/course/... ❇️ "From A1 to A2 in 12 weeks": https://deutsch-mit-yehor.com/course/... ❇️ "From A2 to B1 in 8 weeks": https://deutsch-mit-yehor.com/course/...
