Esmen Carinderia is a popular local eatery in Pasil, Cebu City, known for its authentic Cebuano dishes and budget-friendly prices, especially its signature linarang. Despite its simple and modest setting, it gained international recognition after being awarded a Michelin Guide Philippines Bib Gourmand, an honor given to establishments that serve high-quality food at reasonable prices, highlighting the value and excellence of local Filipino cuisine. Unfortunately, when I visited, the porcupine fish or linarang was not available due to the effects of Bagyong Basyang, which made the fish difficult to catch. The only dishes available were larang pandawan, bakasi with malunggay, and tinolang yellowfin tuna. I decided to try the yellowfin tuna for ₱120, with corn rice for ₱12 each. The meal was perfect for breakfast—especially with a bit of chili added to the soup, which gave it a nice kick and paired perfectly with the corn rice.
