Bosnian War and the Siege of Sarajevo | Rare Footage of War's End (1995)

Between 28 December 1995 and 1 January 1996, ITN filmed people in the Bosnian city of Sarajevo and the enclave of Goražde beginning the process of rebuilding their lives amid the ruins of war. After nearly four years of conflict and atrocities, the Bosnian War had been brought to an end by the US-brokered Dayton Peace Agreement. Sarajevo’s residents had endured one of the longest sieges in modern history – facing relentless shelling, sniper fire, and severe shortages imposed by Bosnian Serb forces encircling the city. Eight days before this footage was filmed, NATO had deployed the Implementation Force (IFOR) across Bosnia to enforce the Dayton Accords' military provisions. In Sarajevo, IFOR was tasked with creating a demilitarized ‘Zone of Separation’ between Serb-held suburbs and Bosnian-controlled areas, and overseeing the staged withdrawal of Bosnian Serb troops – using force if necessary to ensure compliance. While Sarajevo was besieged, the Bosniak enclave of Goražde – surrounded by territory largely controlled by Bosnian Serbs for much of the war – had endured years of isolation and repeated assaults by Bosnian Serb forces. Declared a UN ‘safe area’ in 1993, it became a stark symbol of the war’s brutality and the limits of international protection.
