In 1980, the Austrian Armed Forces announced a competition for a new, modern service pistol to replace the Walther P38 pistols, which had remained in service since World War II. The competition, which featured such industry giants as Heckler & Koch, SIG Sauer, Beretta, FN, and Steyr, won in 1982. The winner was a design by an unknown company that had never developed weapons before, and whose main product was curtain rods. I'm, of course, talking about the now-legendary Glock 17 pistol, which revolutionized the world of firearms and gave birth to a new kind of pistol.
