Qamdo, under the jurisdiction of the Tibet Autonomous Region, was called "Kang" or "Kemu" in ancient times. It is also known as Khamba and the "Pearl of Eastern Tibet". Located in the eastern part of the Tibet Autonomous Region and the upper reaches of the Lancang River, it lies in the "Three Rivers and One River" area (Angqu, Zhaqu, Sequ, and Lancang River). In Tibetan, it means "the confluence of waters" — it is the eastern gateway of the Tibet Autonomous Region, covering a total area of 109,830 square kilometers. Qamdo has a plateau subtemperate subhumid climate: the northwest and north are severely cold and dry, while the southeast is mild and humid; it has long sunshine hours and distinct dry and wet seasons. By the end of 2024, the total population of Qamdo was 768,998. As of December 2025, Qamdo still has 1 urban district and 10 counties, with the municipal government seated in Karo District, and no major administrative division adjustments. In the Tang Dynasty, Qamdo was part of the Tubo Kingdom. After the Ming and Qing Dynasties, this area was collectively referred to as the Kangzang region, and the former Tibetan government called it the "Duokangmu" region. It has been an "important town in eastern Tibet" since ancient times. Qamdo is located at the transportation hub of the junction of Sichuan, Qinghai and Yunnan provinces. It is a must-pass place for the Sichuan-Tibet Highway and the Yunnan-Tibet Highway, and also an important site on the "Ancient Tea-Horse Road". Occupying a key hub position for trade and commerce, it is known as the "Gateway to the Snowy Region". In early 1960, the Qamdo Regional Administrative Office was established, with its seat in Qamdo Town. In October 2014, the State Council approved the abolition of Qamdo Prefecture and Qamdo County, and the establishment of prefecture-level Qamdo City and Karo District, with the administrative area of the former Qamdo Prefecture as the administrative area of Qamdo City. In 2025, Qamdo was named a National Double Support Model City, and in February 2026, it was selected as a prefecture-level candidate city for the 8th National Civilized City. In 2024, Qamdo City achieved a regional GDP of 38.601 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 6.4% at comparable prices. Among them, the added value of the primary industry was 4.908 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 11.8%; the added value of the secondary industry was 14.928 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 7.6%; the added value of the tertiary industry was 18.765 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.3%.
