Main channel    / @retroentrax   Moon Cresta is a fixed-screen shooter in which the player moves a spacecraft horizontally along the bottom of the playfield and fires at successive waves of alien attackers. Each enemy type follows a distinct movement pattern, diving toward the player, splitting into smaller targets, or otherwise becoming more dangerous as the sequence progresses. Contact with an enemy or its attack destroys the currently active ship section. The player begins with Unit 1, a small and maneuverable craft equipped with a single laser cannon. After surviving the first four enemy waves, the player enters a timed docking sequence and attempts to connect with Unit 2. A successful docking adds two more cannons to the combined ship and awards bonus points. After two further waves, another docking sequence allows Unit 3 to be attached, increasing the ship’s firepower to five cannons. Each successful connection provides greater offensive power but also creates a larger target that is more difficult to protect. Docking requires the player to carefully align the moving ship sections before time expires; a poorly judged approach can destroy one of them. The three sections also function as the player’s lives, and surviving sections may be launched individually if another has already been lost. After the full sequence of eight enemy waves has been completed, play returns to Unit 1 and begins again at a higher difficulty. One or two players can participate, with players alternating turns. The North American arcade release titled Eagle uses altered graphics and adds an eagle-shaped enemy. The 8-bit computer conversions adapt the arcade game’s stages, docking system, graphics, and sound to their respective hardware, while many later console, handheld, computer, and mobile releases reissue the arcade or PlayStation versions. The PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch editions reproduce the arcade game as part of the Arcade Archives series.
