"I want to correspond! Playfulness, interest, anxiety, passion, and other affective modes of mail art." Mail art, or "postal art," which emerged as a network of friendly exchanges in the second half of the 20th century, was a response to the need to create networks of support, mutual interest, and enthusiasm in the face of art commercialization or ideological restrictions. Many artists, curators, and historians who have commented on this type of artistic interaction begin with "pleasure" and "joy," paying tribute to mail art's fundamental principles of understanding and communication rather than the usual representation and self-expression. Our focus, however, will be on more nuanced states: in this lecture, we will examine mail art as a subtle system of materialized experiences—interest, tenderness, passion, anger—that manifested the social, political, and environmental tensions of its time (but are so understandable today).
