During the communist era, leaving Poland and legally traveling to the West remained a dream for most citizens. Passports were issued to only a select few, the borders were heavily guarded, and any attempt to escape could result in imprisonment or even death. Some tried to escape across the green border. Others hid in trucks or on ships. However, there were those who chose a much riskier route: hijacking a passenger plane. In the 1970s and 1980s, LOT Polish Airlines hijackings were a regular occurrence, with as many as 20 in 1970 alone.
