🔥⚙️ O DIA EM QUE O PORTO PAROU: A Ascensão e Queda Industrial de Pelotas 🏭

What happened to the Port of Pelotas? Why did the factories close? And how did the old mill and Cosulã become part of UFPel? In this episode, we walk through the port area of ​​Pelotas (RS) — known as the Porto neighborhood — to understand the industrial rise and fall that marked southern Brazil in the 20th century. We begin on the banks of the São Gonçalo Canal, where we left off in the previous episode, and continue to Rua Benjamin Constant, exploring buildings that were once the economic heart of the city: old mills, cooperatives, factories, and structures connected to the river port. 🏭 We visit the old Santista Mill, now the Social Sciences Library and part of the academic complex of the Federal University of Pelotas. 🧶 We learned about the history of Cosulã (Cooperativa Sul-Rio-Grandense de Lã), founded in the 1940s, which integrated 13 municipalities in the region and was a symbol of the state's productive strength until the 1990s. The building, acquired by UFPel in 1996, now houses the Institute of Human Sciences. 🌉 We understood how the construction of the Alberto Pasqualini Bridge (1963) and the consolidation of BR-392 completely changed the logic of goods transportation, shifting the leading role from the Port of Pelotas to the Port of Rio Grande. 📉 We revisit the impact of the closure of Banco Pelotense (1931), the industrial challenges facing competition from São Paulo, the lack of infrastructure, and the high production costs that contributed to the deindustrialization of the southern region of Rio Grande do Sul. 🚋 Along the way, we still find traces of tram tracks, old workers' housing, schools, clubs, and the church that helped consolidate a neighborhood that was once vibrant and today endures as an industrial heritage site. ✨ We also show the square inaugurated in 2023, a cultural and community space that connects two of these historic buildings—a symbol of the new phase of Porto: between memory, university, and urban reoccupation.
