60 Miles Down to the End of Padre Island National Seashore
Watching the weather and studying the tide charts, we decided to have the experience of driving the 60 miles down to the end of the Padre Island National Seashore. After going into town, Corpus Christi, and restocking on water and groceries, we made our way to the entrance of the beach. We stopped to complete the self registration process making the park rangers aware of our presence on the beach and the dates we expected to be out on the beach. We saw many different rigs camping along the first 5 miles of the drive where the sand is well-traveled and tightly packed. After the 5 mile marker, the sand became loose, soft and deep. Since the tide was low, we tried to drive closer to the water where the sand was harder. We dodged many items washed up on the beach such as a large buoy, a couple of metal drums, a weather balloon, and many large pieces of driftwood. We also saw the cabin the biologists use during sea turtle season and the shipwreck of the SS Nicaragua. Camping at the end of the island was a wonderful experience, especially being out there on our own. There was an endless array of wildlife, even deer! Unfortunately, two things brought us back to town sooner than we had hoped - no cell service (had to call our family on Christmas Day) and the drastic change in weather. We hope you enjoy our video and inspires you to add this experience to your bucket list! Keep making the most of your dash!
