According to the figures mentioned in the report, more than 1.27 crore bedroll items were stolen from trains over the last four years, resulting in an estimated financial loss of around ₹104.51 crore to the Railways' private contractors. The data further states that one out of every 1,000 train passengers carries away bedroll items while travelling. The highest number of thefts was reported from the Bikaner Division with 25.76 lakh items missing, followed by the Ranchi, Delhi and Mumbai divisions. While the Delhi Division reportedly succeeded in reducing its theft rate by 79 per cent, not a single item theft was reported from the Tiruchirappalli and Palakkad divisions, making it a notable exception.
