I bought a BARN FIND Mk1 GOLF Cabriolet… WILL it RUN?

A barn-find 1990 Volkswagen Golf Mk1 Cabriolet has arrived at the 71six garage — and after years sitting unused, it’s time to find out whether it still runs and just how much work it needs! Before getting stuck into the car, we take a quick look at the history of Wilhelm Karmann, the German coachbuilder responsible for some legendary cars, including the Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet, Karmann Ghia and, of course, the Mk1 Golf Cabriolet. Despite production of the regular Mk1 Golf ending in the early 1980s, Karmann continued building the convertible until 1993. Nearly 390,000 Golf Cabriolets were eventually produced — and now I’ve somehow ended up with one that has spent years sitting in a barn! There are no diagnostic computers, no complicated electronics and no OBD port. Just a carburettor, mechanical fuel pump, distributor and plenty of old-fashioned engineering. But will it actually run? In this first episode, we: 🔧 Attempt the car’s first start 🔍 Inspect the underside and bodywork 🛞 Check the suspension, brakes and steering ⛽ Investigate the fuel system 🔋 Fit a new battery 🛢️ Begin the first oil and filter change 📝 Start building the enormous parts list The aim isn’t to create a concours show car. The plan is to mechanically recommission it, preserve its character and get this little Mk1 Golf Cabriolet safely back on the road.
