Stationeers: Cryo Cooling
On this video, I'll discuss the two methods of cryo cooling or basically cooling your gases to the point that Oxygen, Volatiles, and/or Nitrogen can cool down. This is the bare minimal amount to get cooling done with either the AC or phase change heat pump setup. I'll go over some benefits and problems with each of them. Benchmarks for cooling temperature to hit: -78C for Volatiles to begin condensing -83C for Nitrogen to begin condensing -111C for Oxygen to begin condensing -143C for Liquid Nitrogen to heal you in a cryo tube. For Both setups, I'm going from 20C down to -147C. AC Setup: Cool some gas that connects to the next AC's waste pipe. You could set the setting to be as low as possible so they constantly cool down, for this setup I set it to 50C from the previous's setting. Either way you eventually run to some severe diminishing returns when the AC's operational efficiency gets very low at cold temps. Thankfully you can get decent cooling up to cryo tube temperatures but if you want to get colder, it gets much harder. Pros: Easy setup and just requires piping and T1 bender. Also quite easy to expand the system for greater cooling throughput. Cons: 350W per AC and at the cold end, you get very minimal energy movement that you approach wall cooler levels of COP or basically spend as much energy as amount of cooling you get out. Phase Change Setup: 1 Phase change heatpump with Pollutants as the refrigerant. Running at over 6MPa for condensation and at 0 for Evaporation. 1 Phase change heatpump with Volatiles as the refrigerant. Again over 6MPa for condensation and at 0 for Evaporation. A heat pump needs 2 phase change devices + a counterflow. Also will need enough refrigerant to have both chambers working without filling the evaporation chamber to 20L of liquids held. Pros: Very power efficient. Moving energy at COP of about 8 (8 J per 1W spent). Cons: Requires you source your refrigerant. Harder to expand in parallel due to needing refrigerant. Needs T2 Pipe bender as I wouldnt recommend without a counterflow heat exchanger.
