June 10, 1976: Advertising and the Public Interest, part of a two-day conference on Issues in Advertising: The Economics of Persuasion, features Representatives of government and of the legal and advertising professions discussing issues such as: Can an innovative newcomer break into a field dominated by a few corporations with huge advertising budgets? Does advertising perpetuate monopoly or is it the best means of combatting it? Should the same criteria of truthfulness apply to campaign oratory as to advertising? Does government regulation of advertising help protect consumers, or does it instead add unnecessary costs while infringing on First Amendment guarantees of free speech? Panelists: Joan Z. Bernstein — Acting Director of the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection Robert H. Bork — Solicitor General of the United States Tom Dillion — Chairman of Batten, Barton, Durstine, and Osborn Benjamin Rosenthal — US Representative from New York Moderator: John Charles Daly Host: Peter Hackes In 1976, transcripts were available by mail for a small fee.
