Amaarae - Princess Going Digital. An exclusive live performance for Vevo. Amaarae’s voice is, really, a couple of distinct voices. Most notable is a squeaky treble that has become her calling card. On ‘Fountain Baby,’ her critically-acclaimed 2023 album, she juxtaposes its childlike innocence with strident lyrics on sexuality, money, and individualism. It’s not the only trick that makes Amaarae stand apart from conventional R&B hip-hop, however. The album reveals her as a fearless creator and inhabitor of experimental sonic worlds. For instance, the viral “Angels In Tibet” grabs thrumming African percussion and mashes it with gurgling bass synths. Producers have taken a liking to remixing the unique track, including Kaytranada. Elsewhere on the album she invokes a customary mid-register vocal attenuation; it brings a lush and hushed vibe to “Reckless & Sweet.” Our cameras revealed yet another angle to Amaarae’s dynamic delivery skills when “Princess Going Digital” was presented for our stage.
