Argentinien - über den Gipfeln der Anden in gefährliche Leewellen
Daring glider pilots in the Argentinian Andes. Like surfers in Hawaii, they too are searching for the perfect wave. Only this one is at an altitude of 12,000 meters. More precisely, they are looking for the waves of wind behind the mountains. These so-called lee waves enable record-breaking glider flights. But they are also unpredictable and responsible for numerous critical situations and even plane crashes in civil aviation. A small group of scientists and pilots – among them world record holder in gliding, Klaus Ohlmann – have set out in their gliders to explore this dangerous wind phenomenon. They want to soar high and simultaneously collect scientific data. With the results of their flights, they can make aviation safer.
