I Speak From Real Experience-This Frontman Is the Biggest D-Bag in MUSIC & There's NOT a Close 2nd!
Coming up…Its' Another Volume of Songs that have become PUNCHLINES! Today we’re back with more pop culture jabs, left hooks, and knockout blows… That’s right, it’s another edition of the fan favorite “Punchlines.” And for this one, we’ve got memes, parodies, and some late-night show mockery all combining to poke fun at musicians who may or may not have had it coming. For this one, we’ve got the grammar police on patrol, ready to take down a musician who sang about a figure of speech that she got completely wrong: the hit song Ironic by Alanis Morissette And the world has never let her live it down. Then there’s a conspiracy theory about an artist who supposedly died and was replaced with a body double. But it’s not Paul McCartney, it's Avril Lavigne. Plus, the story of the instrumentalist who has sold 75 million albums worldwide. But will anyone admit to owning his music? Not on your life..Hint: It's Kenny G. And finally, there’s the singer who has had more diss tracks written about her than any other singer in music history Can you guess it?. If you remember playing a good old-fashioned game of old maid… You’ll dig this channel of deep musical nostalgia. Make sure to subscribe and like, share, and comment. Alright, I’ve gotten bombarded with hundreds of requests for another episode of our series, Punchlines. So here we are, and this one might be our best yet. Starting up the Punchlines Countdown at #6, it’s an artist that I love. In fact, I saw here in concert last year. It’s Alanis Morissette with one of the most iconic and least ironic songs of alternative rock. You know which one I’m talking about… It’s like rain on your wedding day. That’s right, we’re gonna be marking up Alanis’s 1996 smash with a little bit of red ink. So is it ironic that “Ironic” isn’t really ironic? I don’t even know at this point! English teachers and grammar police assemble in the comment section below and tell us what you think. Ha ha. Yeah, this one is going to be fun… In 1995, Alanis dropped her third album, Jagged Little Pill. It was a raw, fire-breathing collection of confessional tracks. The lead single "You Oughta Know" went completely scorched-earth… and rumor has it that it was Full House's Dave Coulier in the crosshairs. After that Jagged Little Pill just kept kicking out the hits… "Hand in My Pocket," "Head Over Feet," "You Learn,” and of course Ironic… her biggest hit single, going to #4. The album, of course, went on to sell over 33 million copies. Morissette wrote Ironic with Glen Ballard, who produced Jagged Little Pill. The song was released as a single on February 27, 1996, and almost from the get-go, smart-ass critics and fans started volunteering grammar lessons for Alanis in print and pop culture media. A traffic jam when you're already late? A free ride when you've already paid? 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife. None of this is actually at all ironic. They're all just… unfortunate. Bad luck. Coincidence, maybe she could have called the song Murphy’s Law. … There’s a pretty funny bit by Irish comic Ed Byrne who took aim at Ironic and broke it all down for us in extreme detail back in the late 90s. As he quips there’s nothing ironic about being stuck in a traffic jam when you’re already late… that is, unless you are a city planner who is late for a seminar for city planners where you were giving a talk about how you solved the problem of traffic congestion in your city… well, now that would be ironic. It’s a funny bit… I recommend checking it out. By the end, he reaches the hilarious conclusion that the only truly ironic thing about the song is the fact that a song called "Ironic" contains absolutely no irony at all. For Alanis’s part, she has said in interviews that she and Glen Ballard “weren't thinking too deeply about the meaning of ‘ironic’.” They were just trying to come up with quirky, bittersweet vignettes. I get it. I mean it is a pop song…
