A tour of the Montrose neighborhood (Houston nightlife on Westheimer Road)

The Montrose neighborhood is a cool and vibrant neighborhood that's just west of downtown Houston. It's known for being a hip and eccentric area with restaurants, art, music, and bars. It's had a strong LGBTQ community that began around the 1970's, and it's known as "the strangest neighborhood east of the Pecos." There are many popular bars along the strip of Westheimer road, including Catbirds, Anvil, Refuge and Poison Girl. Music venues include La Grange, Avant Garden and Numbers. Anderson Fair is another popular music venue located just off of Westheimer road. It's a historic venue that has been supporting Texas singer-songwriters since the 1970's, including Townes Van Zandt, Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen, Guy Clark, and Lucinda Williams. Today, Matt Harlan hosts a songwriter showcase there and he was kind enough to invite me up on stage. Thanks to Wayne Wilkerson for accompanying on guitar. Good times.
