Lanz Bulldog - Von Diesel, Hitze und schwerem Stahl – Die faszinierende Technik erklärt.

Lanz Bulldog - A Look at True Classics of Agricultural Technology Anyone interested in historic agricultural machinery can't ignore the Lanz Bulldog. Built in Mannheim, it is one of the most famous tractors of the pre-war era – and not without reason. We are standing here in front of two of these impressive vehicles, both equipped with so-called hot-bulb engines, whose simplicity and robustness still impress today. Both tractors date from before the Second World War. This is evident, among other things, from their solid construction: pre-war models were equipped with particularly heavy flywheels. Later, during the war, material savings had to be made – this primarily affected weight. But the basic design remained virtually the same over the years. Inside is an impressive engine: a single-cylinder with a displacement of 10.3 liters. The piston alone weighs between 35 and 38 kilograms – a real heavyweight. Despite its simplicity, the hot-bulb engine is extremely reliable. Particularly noteworthy is the sound of these engines, which Bulldog fans consider unique. Optional Equipment: Six-Speed Transmission One of the two tractors features a six-speed transmission with a range shift – a rarity. Most Bulldogs were delivered with only three gears. The range shift allows driving in two ranges, effectively doubling the number of gears. Added to this are a clutch pedal, handbrake, and an optional foot brake – something that wasn't a given back then. The power of the two tractors differs: one delivers 45 hp, the other 25 hp to the axle. Nevertheless, they share the same basic engine. A good distinguishing feature for the more powerful models is the number of cooling elements on the right side: four on the large Bulldog, three on the small Bulldog. There are also clear differences in diesel consumption between full load and hobby use. A working day in the field could consume a good 40 liters. Those who drive the Bulldog today for fun can get by with around 20 to 25 liters. Earlier Lanz tractors used simple evaporative coolers. However, the models shown here already have a circulation system with a fan, which effectively cools the cooling water during operation – allowing for longer operating times without overheating. The Bulldog also has a so-called three-chamber tank: diesel for operation, engine oil for lubrication, and gasoline for gasoline starting, which operates via a spark plug and a summer ignition coil. This starting technology was optional and replaced the classic heating lamp – particularly practical in colder temperatures. Systematic Starting – and Sometimes in the Wrong Direction A Bulldog can be started using an electric starter – or traditionally using the steering wheel on the flywheel. Especially with gasoline starting with an ignition coil, a spark is generated in the cylinder head. Once the engine is running, it switches from gasoline to diesel after a few minutes – as soon as the so-called glow plug is hot enough to ignite the diesel. By the way: It can happen that the engine runs backwards when starting. Sounds unusual, but it's not uncommon for a Lanz. Experienced drivers can get the engine back on track with the help of the injection pump. Conclusion: Hands-on mechanics A Lanz Bulldog is much more than just an old tractor – it's a living example of technical history. The combination of simple construction, mechanical sophistication, and genuine character makes it a favorite among collectors, mechanics, and tractor enthusiasts to this day. Anyone who has ever experienced how a Bulldog starts, chugs, and works will understand why these machines still delight so many people decades after their production.
