A 15th-century historical monument, its construction was initiated by Louis XI in the town of Vernou-sur-Brenne in Touraine. Louis XI had decided that the capital of the Kingdom of France should be Tours. He used the foundations of the local feudal castle, which he had dismantled, to give the new building a Venetian Renaissance inspiration, with walls strikingly adorned with tufa stone and brick.
