Screwworm fly returns, raising alerts for Texas animal owners

A parasitic fly known as the screwworm has been detected in the U.S. for the first time in decades, with seven confirmed cases — six in South Texas and one involving a dog in New Mexico. Experts say the insect, a blue‑green fly whose larvae can burrow into wounds, can be deadly if not identified and treated quickly.
