Short Description (Summary) Step-by-step weathering of an HO covered wagon (Jouef HJ6291): readily available materials, brush techniques, "dirt" washes, scenic earths, and touch-ups. Video tutorial + feedback. Long Description Weathering of an HO covered wagon (Jouef HJ6291) — a complete and beginner-friendly tutorial. In this video, I transform a new, shiny wagon into a well-maintained, used one: the goal is realism without exaggeration. All operations are done with a brush (no airbrush), using common materials (acrylic paints, 70% alcohol, scenic earths, and a "dirt" wash). Ideal for model railroaders who want to learn weathering step by step. What you'll see in the video: Why start with used parts and how to photograph your model before/after. Removing the body and inserting a polystyrene block for handling without touching it. Optional removal of the rear coupling (permanent operation). Painting the reinforcements and recesses (diluted burnt umber), touching up panels (various colors). Applying a grime wash, tips on dilution and application. Using weathering powders for dust and rust, finishing with a matte varnish. Reassembly and placement at the end of the convoy. Lessons learned: mistakes to avoid and tips for a natural result. Materials used (excerpts): Brushes: 5/0 (details) and flat #4 (surfaces) Acrylic paints (Amsterdam / Pébéo — burnt umber, ochres, sienna, white) 70% rubbing alcohol (for rapid dilution) Recycled wash (from a reused container), decorative earths (Artitec or equivalent) Foam maintenance bench, toothpicks, polystyrene block, craft knife, Dremel/clamp Matte spray varnish, cotton swabs, absorbent paper, magnifying glass, good lighting Practical tips: Take a photo before each step (angles + consistent lighting). Work with very thinned paints: acrylics darken as they dry. Several light coats are best. Label your containers (recycled wash, solvents) and store them in airtight containers. Take care of fine brushes (5/0); keep a spare. After varnishing, if the weathering powder fades too much, reapply it locally.
