L'Hôtel-Dieu : l'hôpital où l'on venait mourir

Paris, 1670. Just steps from Notre-Dame lies a hell that official history prefers to forget. The Hôtel-Dieu is the oldest hospital in the world. But in the Grand Siècle (the 17th century), it wasn't a place of healing: it was an antechamber of death. Four thousand patients crammed into wards designed for a thousand. Beds shared six to a bed, mingling the dying, newborns, and plague victims. Doctors bleeding already weakened bodies to exhaustion. And yet, amidst this chaos, an army of women strives to preserve something that the science of the time cannot provide: dignity. In this episode, I take you into the forgotten corridors of the Hôtel-Dieu—where the sacred borders on barbarity, and where the history of our modern medicine unfolds in silence. 🔔 Subscribe and turn on notifications so you don't miss any of our historical tidbits. 👍 A thumbs up is the best way to support the channel! 💬 Question of the day: If you had lived in Paris in 1670, would you have preferred to risk a bed at the Hôtel-Dieu or try to treat yourself?
